I've read 85 books that were published in 2019. For every bestseller--overrated or otherwise--there were 3 or 4 smaller, quieter books that changed the way I look at the world.

I no longer have a home at a specific publication, so I'm especially thankful that I can share the list with you here.

I'm still writing up my list of best books of 2019, but in the meantime can I offer you my own personal best of the decade list?

I have also read parts of maybe 100 other 2019 books. But if they didn't make the list I won't talk about them here.

My heart is with the publicists and editors and ASSISTANTS, damnit, who are overworked and underpaid, and who do it for the love of the books.

I understand that what is popular is not always good, and that big bestsellers pay for smaller titles. But it breaks my heart that so many smaller titles are never given the opportunity to shine.

If I seem embittered on here about the cynical publishing of "authors" like Donald Trump Jr., it's because I am.
