The kindest, smartest, nurturing, best of best. ❤️📚 @DoubledayUK @mariannevelmans is retiring in 2020. As well as Top Publisher, she has been a very dear mentor, inspiration, friend to me. And will continue to be so, even while we don’t share office space. #PublishingInspiration
These words and those of the inimitable Lee Child are giving us all the feels here @DoubledayUK. We're going to miss @mariannevelmans SO MUCH! Before she goes, we'll be doing our best to assimilate as much of her wisdom & calm as possible. Oh, and 31 yrs of publishing gossip!
Women's Prize winning author Téa Obreht has followed up the Women's Prize-winning The Tiger's Wife with a reimagining of the American Southwest. Here she is with more about it and some terrific book recommendations to boot.
Really enjoying @JLewisStempel’s Still Water, which I’m reading for my @TheTimesBooks’s round up of the best nature writing of 2019 - far from being just another dose of pretty rural writing, Still Water is a call to arms. Do the ducks a favour and turn your garden into a pond 🦆
Without exaggeration, I think about this @csittenfeld passage nearly every day. “Did we believe we could pick and choose what passed quickly?” cuts like a knife every time ✨💔
Given that more than 16 years have passed since I wrote this passage, more than 14 since it was published & I’m now the age of 3 Lee Fioras put together, I fully stand by the sentiment 😜
The winner of the #HWA Gold Crown Award for 2019 is @DianeSetterfie1 for Once Upon a River, a book of immense vivacity and charm. Huge congratulations, Diane and @TransworldBooks!

Replying to @DianeSetterfie1: I owe the hugest thank you to the HWA and the judges. What an honour this is. I’m now on the train home pinching mysel…
Here’s a pic of @thehighlowshow tour bookshelf feat. (most of) the 📚 that moved/ changed/ stayed with us. Part of the show involved a deep-dive into self-help from the past including Jilly Cooper’s 1969 How To Stay Married and Lynn Barber’s 1973 How To Improve Your Man In Bed.
Love this! It's great to see our authors @csittenfeld, Bill Bryson and the incomparable, much-missed Nora Ephron in amongst these brilliant titles. 📚😍
I finished #MyWildAndSleeplessNights by @cloverstroud last night & had a good old weep over Clover’s relationship with her teenage son Jimmy. If you love beautifully written memoir, chaotic families & big emotions, big life lessons & wisdom then this is for you. Coming 20th Feb.
"I bought another book"

"I paid a terrible price for this knowledge"
- classy Faustian vibes
- implies all books are priceless treasures. which they are.
