Joe Gaines, Choctaw, sang an honor song for all the Native women who led the decades-long fight to changing the name and logo of the Washington NFL team.

If this doesn't bring you to tears you don't understand the fight Native people face every day in this county. ❤❤❤

Dan Snyder said the Washington Football name would NEVER change. But it looks like never is today.

This is the result of decades of Native activism, mostly led by native women. #notyourmascot

Once again lets hear it for all Native Women! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

My grandma was alive for boarding schools. She was alive when we natives got the right to vote. She was alive for the passage if ICWA after having her kids taken. And now she's alive to see the name change. What else can we accomplish for our elders and for our children?

Yes, I'm happy that the name is changing. We are indeed not mascots. Id be even happier if folks would call their member of Congress to tell them that indigenous people matter and that's why we must pass a bill banning culturally insensitive sports teams and the Savannah's Act.

Join @ShaiDeLuca and I tomorrow at 10ET to discuss indigenous stories here in the Americas and in Israel, where Jews have maintained a connection and presence for thousands of years. How do we discuss history and embrace our indigineity when so many seek to erase it?

Of course my coffee deprived brain messed this up. 11 ET 10CT tomorrow!

There will be backlash against Native peoples from this, we are already seeing it. There is no doubt about that.

Support goes beyond the name change, and toward recognition that the treatment of our peoples has always been a tragedy and we deserve better.

The historic announcement today that the Washington team will retire its racist name and logo is the culmination of over a half century of Native-led advocacy in legal, political, scholarly and corporate settings.
