Recipe for #haroset (sweetmeats), a traditional sweet made of fruit, chopped or ground nuts and sweet red wine. This 18th century recipe is written in Ladino (Judeo-Spanish in Latin characters). For a translation see our new post #Seder #Passover2020
We hope you enjoy these reimagined images and verses from #JuliaDonaldson and #AxelScheffler most-loved books and characters in light of the current times we all find ourselves in #inthistogether #rhymesforthetimes
We love these illustrations of #JuliaDonaldson and #AxelScheffler's much loved characters educating children about safety. If these made you smile, you might like to have a go at drawing your very own Gruffalo...
Although our @britishlibrary buildings are not open at present, we look forward to sharing some #digitised and born-digital collections for #Archive30 month...
Day 1: an overview of digital collections, including plenty of maps🗺️💻
#Archive30 kicks off today. 30 days spotlighting archives everywhere.
The @britishlibrary is home to the nation’s @soundarchive, an extraordinary collection of nearly 7 million recordings of speech, music, wildlife and the environment.
.@BLSoundHeritage are shining a spotlight on @soundarchive in celebration of #Archive30 this month. Poetry readings, birdsong, performances of the works of Frederic Chopin... you can listen to selections from the archive from home at #YourArchive
Calling all children! The @britishlibrary
needs your help to create a zoo of talking animals.
Write & illustrate your creature with tips from Axel Scheffler & let your imagination soar & flutter.
We'll repost your creations #DiscoveringChildrensBooks
Today is the first #Dantedì! Although only virtually, there’s plenty of initiatives to celebrate Dante Alighieri in Italy and around the world. @ItalyinUK @britishlibrary @BL_European @BLMedieval will take you through the poet’s life and work. Stay tuned! #Poetry vs #COVID-19 !
If you would like to see more apocalyptic images on your #WFH lunch break, our suggestion for #Dantedì is the earliest surviving complete feature-length film, made in 1911, 'Inferno'. Silent, visually striking and inspired by #GustaveDoré's iconic images:
For #Dantedi a breathtaking copy of La Commedia, printed in Florence in 1481 by Nicolaus Laurentii. It has plates engraved by Baldini from designs by Botticelli. The printed illustrations are pasted in, the printer didn’t seem to be confident of printing them with the texts.
To keep our users and staff safe we’ve taken the decision to close our physical sites in London & Boston Spa for the time being and suspend events. We will continue to offer as many online services we can so the Library remains open to everyone, wherever you are in the world. 1/3
